Yes–there is an app for that!!! Have you ever forgotten your keys?? Or do you hide the spare in your “safe spot” aka the planter, the welcome mat or the garden gnome? Now, what if you could let people in and yourself in from afar with the press of a button? Now you can, thanks to Lockitron, a combination home-security system and smart phone app.
Here’s how it works: You replace part of your door with Lockitron’s internet-enabled lock (starting at $295), which works with most types of locks including dead bolts, handles, knobs and even apartment buzzers. Then you download the corresponding iPhone app (an Android version is coming soon) and voilà: You can begin locking and unlocking your home from anywhere and everywhere your phone gets service. Even from your office when your cleaning lady wants in to beautify your house!!
Aside from the joy of having one less thing to carry around (though the installment kit does come with a few “real” keys) and the joy from NOT having to turn around because you locked your boyfriend out when he was at the gym, we love the idea of letting in our kids/repairmen/etc. when we’re not at home. Even more fabulous–you can grant house guests access by sending them a text message that enables their phone to temporarily work as yours does. It makes their stay easier and gives them a sense of freedom.
